Museum of Crafts & Design — Kyoto

After arriving in Kyoto in the evening, it was a quick bite to eat at a nearby izakaya and an early night to bed before I got up the next morning to attend a group activity at the Museum of Crafts & Design.

I was enamoured by the exhibition, which demonstrated Japan’s innovation and detail in several traditional crafts. Fabric work, including kimono and obi design, was featured, alongside traditional Japanese fans, basket-making, wood sculpting, and mokuhanga (Japanese woodblock printing.

As an artist I’m so glad I was able to begin my time in this historic city by learning just how much Japan has contributed to the arts, and how I might adopt or at least trial some techniques when I’m back working in a studio.
