Koyasan — a Buddhist sanctuary

Continuing with the spiritual theme, I decided to visit Koyasan. A regional mountain area housing a town of Buddhist monasteries that are currently practicing and open to visitors. I’ve never felt more in peace than I have since being here, I’ve also found it incredibly stimulating as an artist. Surrounded by nature in such an energetically positive and pure environment, I’m inspired to reflect on Buddhist teachings in my artwork, and in my personal life too frankly.

The nearby town centre is home to the shrines and temples which helped solidify Buddhism in Japan, and begin its spread. I had the good fortune to enter several of these buildings and even speak to some monks, I’m astounded by their hospitality and genuine desire to talk to me despite English being slightly difficult for them. I’ve only had one night here, and it will need to be longer next time - nevertheless, this is my highlight of Japan thus far. Truly breathtaking.
